A Call to Medical Missionary Evangelism

"During the night of February 27, 1910, a representation was given me in which the unworked cities were presented before me as a living reality, and I was plainly instructed that there should be a decided change from past methods of working. For months the situation has been impressed on my mind, and I urged that companies be organized and diligently trained to labor in our important cities." — A Call to Medical Evangelism, p. 13.

"Workers-gospel medical missionaries-are needed now. You cannot afford to spend years in preparation. Soon doors now open to the truth will be forever closed. Carry the message now. Do not wait, allowing the enemy to take possession of the fields now open before you. Let little companies go forth to do the work to which Christ appointed His disciples. Let them labor as evangelists, scattering our publications and talking of the truth to those they meet. Let them pray for the sick, ministering to their necessities, not with drugs, but with nature's remedies, and teaching them how to regain health and avoid disease." — Counsels on Health, p. 397.

"While city missions must be established where colporteurs, Bible-workers, and practical medical missionaries may be trained to reach certain classes, we must also have, in our cities, consecrated evangelists through whom a message is to be borne so decidedly as to startle the hearers." — Gospel Workers, p. 354.

"A great mistake has been made in neglecting the work in the cities. For every year's delay there have been lost opportunities. Although a few places have been entered many centers should be established where there would be employed hundreds of workers. In every city there should be a city mission, that would be a training school for workers. Many of our brethren must stand condemned in the sight of God because they have not done the very work that God would have them do." — Letter B-56-1910.

"There should be connected with our missions, training schools for those who are about to enter the field as laborers. They should feel that they must become as apprentices to learn the trade of laboring for the conversion of souls. The labor in these schools should be varied. The study of the Bible should be made of primary importance, and at the same time there should be a systematic training of the mind and manners, that they may learn to approach people in the best possible way. All should learn how to labor with tact and with courtesy, and with the Spirit of Christ." — Evangelism, pp. 107-108.

"God works by means of instruments, or second causes. He uses the gospel ministry, medical missionary work, and the publications containing present truth to impress hearts. All are made effectual by means of faith. As the truth is heard or read, the Holy Spirit sends it home to those who hear and read with an earnest desire to know what is right. The gospel ministry, medical missionary work, and our publications are God's agencies. One is not to supersede the other." — Evangelism, p. 547.

"I have been instructed that we are not to delay to do the work that needs to be done in health reform lines. Through this work we are to reach souls in the highways and the byways.

"I can see in the Lord's providence that the medical missionary work is to be a great entering wedge, whereby the diseased soul may be reached.

Much of the prejudice that prevents the truth of the third angel's message from reaching the hearts of the people, might be removed if more attention were given to health reform. When people become interested in this subject, the way is often prepared for the entrance of other truths. If they see that we are intelligent with regard to health, they will be more ready to believe that we are sound in Bible doctrines.

"This branch of the Lord's work has not received due attention, and through this neglect much has been lost. If the church would manifest a greater interest in the reforms through which God Himself is seeking to fit them for His coming, their influence would be far greater than it now is. God has spoken to His people, and He designs that they shall hear and obey His voice. Although the health reform is not the third angel's message, it is closely connected with it. Those who proclaim the message should teach health reform also. It is a subject that we must understand, in order to be prepared for the events that are close upon us, and it should have a prominent place. Satan and his agents are seeking to hinder this work of reform, and will do all they can to perplex and burden those who heartily engage in it. Yet none should be discouraged at this, or cease their efforts because of it. The prophet Isaiah speaks thus of one characteristic of Christ, 'He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till He have set judgment in the earth.' Then let not His followers talk of failure or discouragement, but remember the price paid to rescue man that he might not perish, but have eternal life." — Counsels on Diet and Foods, pp. 76-77.

"We have no time to lose. The end is near. The passage from place to place to spread the truth will soon be hedged with dangers on the right hand and on the left. Everything will be placed to obstruct the way of the Lord's messengers, so that they will not be able to do that which it is possible for them to do now. We must look our work fairly in the face and advance as fast as possible in aggressive warfare. From the light given me of God I know that the powers of darkness are working with intense energy from beneath, and with stealthy tread Satan is advancing to take those who are now asleep, as a wolf taking his prey. We have warnings now which we may give, a work now which we may do; but soon it will be more difficult than we can imagine. God help us to keep in the channel of light, to work with our eyes fastened on Jesus our Leader, and patiently, perseveringly press on to gain the victory." — Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 22.

"God calls for Christian families to go into communities that are in darkness and error, and work wisely and perseveringly for the Master. To answer this call requires self-sacrifice. While many are waiting to have every obstacle removed, souls are dying without hope and without God in the world. Many, very many, for the sake of worldly advantage, for the sake of acquiring scientific knowledge, will venture into pestilential regions and endure  hardship and privation. Where are those who are willing to do this for the sake of telling others of the Saviour? Where are the men and women who will move into regions that are in need of the gospel, that they may point those in darkness to the Redeemer? — Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 33.

"The commission given to the disciples is given also to us. Today, as then, a crucified and risen Saviour is to be uplifted before those who are without God and without hope in the world. The Lord calls for pastors, teachers, and evangelists. From door to door His servants are to proclaim the message of salvation. To every nation, kindred, tongue, and people the tidings of pardon through Christ are to be carried. Not with tame, lifeless utterances is the message to be given, but with clear, decided, stirring utterances. Hundreds are waiting for the warning to escape for their lives. The world needs to see in Christians an evidence of the power of Christianity. Not merely in a few places, but throughout the world, messages of mercy are needed. — Gospel Workers, p. 29.

MEDICAL MISSIONARY EVANGELISTS NEEDED

  • Do you find you are not effective enough in your missionary work and outreach efforts and would like to learn how to be a much better evangelist for Christ?
  •  Do you want to learn how to put together different kinds of Bible studies as well as prepare and present subjects that are truly applicable to the needs of others?
  •  Do you want to become more acquainted with your body and learn the best way to enhance your health mentally, physically, and spiritually?
  •  Do you want to learn how to apply God's health message as an entering wedge to reach other souls and equip yourself to travel to different places as a medical missionary evangelist for Christ in these last days?
Surely, God's people are drawing closer and closer to the end of time and yet there is much work that still needs to be done on the earth. Time is short and what must be done must be done quickly. Hence, it is now very essential that God's true children are trained to labor effectively in the Master's vineyard.

WHY BECOME A MEDICAL MISSIONARY?

Since Jesus Christ is our perfect example, let us consider the manner in which He labored. Christ showed a great interest in all aspects of man. He sought to bring total healing to the minds, bodies, and spirits of all with whom He came into contact. He came to "preach good tidings unto the meek" and to "bind up the broken hearted" (Isa. 61:1). This is medical missionary evangelistic work. It is the work of teaching and healing. Christ was indeed the greatest medical missionary evangelist that ever lived, and since this is the work He did, then this is the work His true followers must do today.

"Workers—medical missionaries—are needed now." CH 397.

"Some utterly fail to realize the importance of missionaries" being also medical missionaries. . . . A minister of the gospel who is also a medical missionary, who can cure physical ailments, is a much more efficient worker than one who cannot do this. His work as a minister of the gospel is much more complete." MM 245.

Such workers are better equipped to minister unto the needs of their fellow man. As God's laborers they  are not limited in their ability to help souls because they are trained to labor in a wholistic manner; they supply the mental, physical, and spiritual needs of others.
